“Now, that my affection is so deep, now, I am left alone in this world…” croons Argentinian singer Nidia in her version of the tango “Sin Lágrimas” (without tears). Mourning a lost love is the most common subject of tango lyrics, but rarely is the protagonist of the story a woman. In this meditation on mourning, all the characters are women, centering women as protagonists in tango’s evolving history. The film features dancing of Argentinian queer tango activists Anahí Carballo & Natalia Fures, and the voice of Argentinian singer Nidia. Nidia was a feminist icon for the ways in which she broke societal expectations for women, starting her singing career at the age of 80. Nidia passed away at age 92 a few days before filming this video.
